Future of 623 is on the rocks The future of 623 On the Rocks is uncertain as the potential buyer says negotiations have been “pushed back” due to some “problems”. Last week, Nelson Live reported that 623 On the Rocks was in liquidation, and 623 In the City was being put into voluntary administration, owing $400,000. Administrator Geoff Falloon of Biz Rescue, says that he is working closely with
the owners of both businesses, Robert Bowe and Michael Graham, who bought them back in May 2011. 623 On the Rocks is set to close its doors in early August, and is in the process of being sold to another party, says Geoff. “We are in the final process of the sale,” he says. “It all should be going through in the next couple of weeks.” Alan McNab, former owner of The Turf
Hotel in Stoke, confirmed he has been in talks to purchase the Rocks Rd restaurant and re-open it as a Monteith’s Brew Bar. Alan, who also owns the Monteith’s Brew Bar in Hanmer Springs, declined to give out any information about his side of the sale, only stating that the proposed new bar has been “pushed back”. Hardy St’s 623 In the City remains open until creditors meet to decide whether
the company goes into liquidation or is allowed to trade on. The first creditors meeting is taking place today. A notice to creditors for that business showed 41 companies were owed money by 623 ITC Ltd, totalling $397,729.93. Around $240,000 of that is owed to the company’s bank. It is unclear how much 623 OTR owes to creditors.

Students at Tahuna School won’t even notice these cold mornings anymore, not with their new woollen slippers on. Principal Barbara Bowen was the brains behind the project, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Tahuna Women’s Institutes’ seasoned knitters. “Modern shoes are often not that waterproof so they come [to school] and they’ve got wet socks, and kids with cold feet can’t learn,” says Barbara. So she talked to her mum, Solveig Sheed, who is a member of the women’s institute, who in turn asked the president of the group, Colleen Humphreys, if they could undertake the project. It’s taken the Tahuna Women’s Institute around two months to knit 130 pairs of slippers for the students but they’re still only halfway. After distributing the first batch last Wednesday, the ladies of the institute will be getting stuck into the last half which they hope to get done in the next few months.

Nelson City councillors were unanimous in their decision to press forward with the Trafalgar Centre upgrade, in a full council meeting last week. The $13 million upgrade to the earthquake-prone building was debated as being too expensive by members of the public during the meeting, but councillors have agreed that the project, despite its hefty price tag, is a “must do” for the city. An engineer’s report was presented to council on July 16, which recommended the demolition and rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets, strengthening work on the western edge of
the new southern end, and $7 million worth of work to the main building. Pulling it down and building a new venue on the same site would cost $25-$30 million. Mayor Rachel Reese called the project “the most challenging for this council,” but concluded that it is “now time to get this building fixed, open, and the city humming again.” The centre, which has been closed since December 2013, has put pressure on other venues in the region, such as Saxton Stadium. “It will be a great relief for many to have events out of Saxton,” says Rachel. “It has been very hard work, but it’s time to move ahead.” Councillors present at the meeting were in full support of

Councillor Brian McGurk assured those in attendance that the council is getting the best possible price for a “complex” rebuild. Councillor Mike Ward stated that much of cost will be returned to the city, especially if there are a couple of really good events. Councillor Ian Barker agreed, saying Nelson needs to
take the opportunity to bring the Trafalgar Centre back to what it was previously intended to be, but it has to be marketed properly. Councillor Gaile Noonan supported the decision wholeheartedly, as did Councillor Matt Lawry, who admitted to a “few sleepless nights” over the centre. Councillor Eric Davey says he was very happy they can get the building open again and even hinted at a week-long opening celebration. The next steps are to complete the pricing and detailed design for the for the southern extension and strengthening of the main building, and develop options for the scope and design of the rebuild. Construction is expected to start in September.

Power company gives $8.3M back Nelson power users will effectively get $150 in their back pockets, thanks to Network Tasman. Every power user in the Nelson and Tasman regions – excluding central Nelson – will get the $150 discount, a total of $8.3 million. Network Tasman is a con-
sumer-owned local electricity distributor. The company also expects to provide a further discount in December 2015 and discounted $8.1 million for customers last winter. Network Tasman CEO Wayne Mackey says virtually all of the company’s 38,500 customers will get a discount, which will
average out at about $150 for each customer. “Eligible consumers will receive a discount irrespective of which electricity retailer they choose. Switching retailers does not alter this entitlement because the discount comes from Network Tasman and not the retailer.”

Nelson Cat Club could have staged a production of Cats last weekend with a colourful mix of feline personalities and fur coats at the Nelson Cat Show. There were 119 cats entered in the show at Hope Hall, which was a championship competition run to national standards. The event featured owners and cats from around the country. Whakatu Drive speeds ‘unsurvivable’: A seven day survey of Whakatu Drive motorists shows an “alarming” number of speeding drivers, with the average speed clocking in at 113kmh. Police received information from NZTA vehicle counts that showed speeds detected over a seven day period of 4000 vehicles on Whakatu Drive. The highest speed detected during that period was 198kmh. One motorist clocked at 170kmh received a nine month disqualification when they appeared in the Nelson District Court recently. Nelson Bays Road Policing Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says the speeds would most likely be unsurvivable.

Nelson-based company National Aircraft Interiors were given the contract to custom design the seats and parts of the interior of the aircraft, along with RepairCraft who perform line maintenance on the fleet. Originally built in the late 80s, the aircraft required an extensive refit with new padded leather seats, yellow detailing and carpet installed in the plane. Robert Inglis and partner Nicki Smith founded Originair this year in an effort to directly link Nelson, Palmerston North, and Wellington. The inaugural flight will be held on August 12.

Woodburner changes needed, say new lobby group Opposition to the Nelson City Council’s strict woodburner policy is organising itself ahead of the next round of consultation this week. Vocal opponents to the bylaw have formed the Wood Burner Lobby Group ahead of a second community meeting as part of a review of the bylaw. Among the founders are former Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male, Graeme O’Brien, Gaire Thompson, Greg West, Melissa Short, Peter Olorenshaw and Harry Pearson. Harry says the group believes fires are a cost-effective way of heating, and if the right wood is used, has little effect on the air quality. “We feel strongly that the council isn’t doing enough. We want people in the community to come forward, especially people who are battling the effects of cold homes.” The rules around woodburners were part of the council’s Air Quality Plan, which aimed to do something about winter smoke in the city. Monitoring and modelling work
last winter showed that there is potential capacity for additional woodburners in central Nelson, Atawhai and Stoke. The council is holding a second public meeting on Thursday to update the community on progress with its Air Plan Review. This follows a meeting held in March to better understand the key issues from the community, and how these could be addressed through the review. Along with a general update, the upcoming meeting will summarise feedback received so far, discuss the various options the review will consider and check whether any suggestions have been missed. The aim of the review is to find a fair and reasonable solution to keeping people warm in their homes, while still meeting the National Environmental Standard for Air Quality set by the government.

Cyclist hospitalised after crash Nelson cycling enthusiast Graham Vercoe has been airlifted to hospital in Dignes Le Bagnes in France with serious injuries, after crashing while riding down a steep hill off the Col d’Allos in the French Alps. Graham was with a group of Nelson cyclists following the Tour de France when the accident happened last week. He was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter and admitted to intensive care with injuries to his upper body. Graham’s wife Shirley posted SP

Two weeks ago, Nelson triathlete and ironman competitor Jude Vincent fractured her elbow in a training ride.

Mapua’s popular ice-cream parlour and cafe, Hamish’s, closed on Sunday after operating successfully for nine years, but it shouldn’t be too long before another one opens on the Mapua Wharf. Hamish’s closed after the lease on their building expired and owner Adele Calteaux decided not to relocate to a new commercial building to be constructed on the site of the former Mapua Aquarium. Adele
says she is disappointed to be closing but has no other option because she can’t afford the $60,000 to $80,000 cost of relocating her business. But last week, the Tasman District Council confirmed that a new ice-cream parlour and cafe operator has signed a lease for one of the seven spaces in the council-owned Shed 4 development. Carol has just celebrated her 70th birthday, and will be returning to Dunedin to be closer to her family. “I’ll miss my friends, and the music. I’ll miss the whole place,” she says. Debbie says that Carol will be “leaving a large hole” at the cathedral. “Carol is a wonderful example of committed volunteer, supporting both the community and her cathedral.”

Nelson Cathedral bid farewell to one of their much loved volunteers on Sunday, who is retiring after 34 years of service. Carol Hurd has been a helping hand at the cathedral since 1981, after she moved to Nelson from Dunedin with her husband Michael, who was to be the dean of the cathedral. Sadly, Michael passed away whilst young, leaving Carol a young widow with a young family. Carol stayed on in Nelson and has been a valued volunteer at the cathedral ever since. “I guess I naturally fell into it,” she says. “I love the building, and have spent the last 15-20 years looking after it and keeping it up to scratch.” Each day at 8am she opens up the building, and then later on, she drives down and locks up the building for the night. Over the years, Carol has arranged the annual Festival of Christmas Trees, helped with the annual Family Fun Night, managed the bookstall and its resources, and helped to set up the cathedral for services on Sunday. Debbie Williams, administrator at the cathedral, says that Carol is the one who “keeps things ticking along,” and will be very hard to replace. “Carol’s a whirlwind,” she says. “She’s the one who makes sure there are supplies for the morning teas after the services, and makes sure our kitchen is clean and tidy. She keeps the candles topped up and makes sure that there is paper for

Trust wants to peek inside blokes’ sheds Jessie Johnston While some sheds may be the final resting place for borer-ridden wood and rusting metal, there are others that are truly spectacular in their contents. Luckily it’s the latter sheds that will be opened up to the public as part of a fundraiser for the Life Education Trust. The Blokes in Sheds Tour has been running for a few years now and gives people the opportunity to peer into some classic kiwi sheds. While half of the most popular sheds from last year’s event will be returning for this year’s tour, organisers are still on the lookout for some new gems to showcase. “It’s about people being passionate about something. In the past we’ve had a guy with his model railway that he’s built in his garage, we’ve had people with collections and Nelson memorabilia, but we’ve also had people with sheds of motorcycles, cars and restorations,” says Life Education Trust chairperson, Michelle Fitzgerald. “We’ve had a really mixed bag and I guess it’s just people who have a passion, or have a collection or
something that other people might find interesting.” Already organisers have secured Higgins Park, which features a range of groups including the steam and transport museums. The tour will also feature a brewery, distillery and much more that people can explore on the day. “At the end of the day it’s winwin, because not only do they get an opportunity to show people what they’re doing and meet likeminded people, they also get an opportunity to give something back to the community,” says Michelle. Life Education Trust is a charitable organisation that provides children with life skills from a mobile classroom. The organization is invited into primary and intermediate schools to educate students on a number of topics, from food and nutrition to social relationships and bullying. The tour will be held on September 13, from 10am until 4pm. Broadgreen house reopens after repair work

Jessie Johnston Broadgreen House will reopen this weekend after undergoing major maintenance work. The house has been closed since the beginning of April in order to put in place a permanent solution to the flood-damaged cellar. In the 2011 flooding, the cellar was badly damaged as the water washed away the clay walls. Remedial strengthening was started immediately after to keep the house open but, of course, the work wasn’t up to earthquake standards. The cellar has now been filled in thanks to a thick interior concrete wall and gravel fill, although the portion of the cellar that visitors view from the doorway is still largely the same, says committee member Helen Le Cren. The project caused a huge amount of disruption to the house, with pieces of their Victorian household collection having to be moved and the back part of the house sealed off. “It was a huge job to prepare it for this work, but inevitably a lot of dust and dirt has got through,” says Helen. The house is now looking forward to a thorough clean before reopening to the public on August 1. Broadgreen House will also have new opening times for the winter period until October 1. Visitors are welcome to view the house from 11am until 3pm.

Trafalgar Centre: If you read the newspaper report months ago, the Trafalgar Centre was to open February 2016. Maybe you were looking forward to seeing some of the great shows travelling throughout New Zealand - well, dream on, it's not a happening thing. The cost for repairs is now estimated at $13 million (and let's hope Nelson people get allocated the work). The heart of Nelson city has almost stopped beating, all we see is empty shops all over our town. Rates and water increases and soon we'll by paying for the air that we breath (as Japan does). We don't' need blue stripes on our footpaths or any more walkways. We need our city to come alive, we need an entertainment centre, so lets get things sorted and soon. M.L. Clinton. Pete Rainey’s wish to have the Nelson council completely take over the ownership of the Theatre Royal and the Suter, plus build a new performing arts centre, should set off alarm bells for ratepayers. The council has loaded the ratepayers with huge amounts of non-core liabilities, at the expense of basic services which receive insufficient attention. Just one example is the commitment to the Brook Sanctuary, which has the potential for very significant repair costs for slips and also for storm damage to the fence. What the better-off people in Nelson choose to overlook is that Nelson is a

low-wage town, with many people really struggling to make ends meet and care for their children. Most of our councillors are in a privileged position and overlook this situation. "It's a really nice gesture," Donna says. "We often come across victims who need comforting and warmth, so these quilts are perfect." Although Joyce says the quilts are "nothing fancy" and have been made to last, Donna disagrees. "I've seen them all and they are beautiful. These ladies have done a wonderful job." Joyce says the quilts were made by the group's 20 members, who come from Richmond, Nelson, Golden Bay and Murchison, using fabric donated by the family of founding member Jill Raine. The Mini Symposium Committee also donated some funds to help purchase fabric for the quilts.

A Nelson quilting group, the UnderCover Girls, has made a heart, and body, warming gesture, donating 30 quilts to Victim Support. The group started about 30 years ago when founding member Joyce Jones got together with some of the students she had taught quilting at Waimea College's community education classes. Joyce says the UnderCover Girls have donated quilts to charity in the past and this year decided to help out Victim Support, last Wednesday handing over the final instalment of 30 quilts. "We initially approached the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade to see if they needed some quilts to keep people warm," Joyce says. "But they told us to approach Victim Support, so we got hold of them and they said they would be ideal for their volunteers." Victim Support service coordinator for Tasman, Donna Smith, says they have already left three quilts at the Nelson Police Station "to give victims of crime warmth and

Motorcycle gang ‘intimidated’ driver A driver says she was intimidated by patched gang members on Whakatu Drive over the weekend. Police are seeking witnesses to an incident on Whakatu Drive on Saturday afternoon in which the motorist has reported being intimidated by a group of
about 10 motorcyclists, some of whom are believed to have been patched gang members. A woman was driving south on Whakatu Drive about 2.15pm, near the Saxton Rd off-ramp, when the alleged incident occurred. Police would like to hear from
anyone who witnessed anything involving a group of motorcycles about this time. Anyone with information can call Nelson Police on 546 3840. Information can also be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Head and shoulders studio portrait of Captain Hubert Satchell Harley (serial no. 7/2019) in military uniform. Harley was born on 16 April 1893 in Nelson, the son of the late William Charles and Edith Florence Harley, of Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as W.C. Harley (father), Waimea Road, Nelson, New Zealand. Harley was an Old Boy of Waitaki Boys' High School and Nelson College where he was recognised as a good sport at school, and a fine prefect. Before enlisting to serve during World War One Harley worked for himself as a farmer. Harley joined the 9th Reinforcements Canterbury Mounted Rifles, C Squadron, during World War One and embarked on 8 January 1916 from Wellington, New Zealand for Egypt. Harley served for less than one year in Egypt and France. He was killed in action whilst serving with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 12th (Nelson) Company in the Somme, France, on 2 October 1916. He was twenty-three years old. His memorial is located in

Knights Templar in Nelson? Who knew? There's plenty of myth and secrecy about the Knights Templar but last week Nelson Weekly reporter Jessie Johnston was given a rare look at how the group operates in Nelson.
The Knights Templar conjures up all manner of thoughts, from secret societies, crusades, Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and Friday the thirteenth. On Saturday, July 18, the Nelson chapter of the Knights Templar gave the public an extremely rare insight into what it means to be a Knight Templar today and the history behind the society. When David Marsh, prior of the Nelson chapter of the Knights Templar, was on holiday in France several years ago, he was lucky enough to come across a document outlining an original initiation ceremony from the year 1160. After photocopying the script, David brought the document home to Nelson and began a year of translating the French text into English. Normally their rituals are kept secret, but because this was not the actual version used in their quarterly meetings they were able to share it with the public. David says it was also a way of backing up the talks he had given to Probus groups on the history of the Knights Templar, and was

The replica ceremony was only expected to draw around 40 members of the public and David says he was “overwhelmed”

by the 105 people who turned up to witness an event that probably won’t happen again. Historically, the Knight Templar’s were a set of warrior monks who came under the auspices of the Pope. They were a law unto themselves with freedom even from
the kings. Their task was to protect the holy land, or Jerusalem, so that Christians could make their pilgrimages. After safeguarding the land for 80 years they started losing bits and bits, and for the next 100 years
they attempted to recapture it with around a dozen crusades. In 1307, the Knight Templar’s were disbanded by the Pope due to pressure from the King of France, who owed the Templar’s a lot of money. There are many theories as to what happened to the Templar’s after they were dissolved, some did join the Knights Hospitaller, which became Knights of St John and who we recognise today as St John Ambulance. Many people also don’t know that the Knight Templar’s introduced the first banking systems. Pilgrims wanting to avoid being robbed on their journey deposited their treasures in a Temple House and were given a document that would ensure equal value was returned to them when they produced it at any Temple House across Europe. To become a Knight Templar, people must first be a Freemason. Masonic Knight Templar’s are no more that 250 years old. The Nelson Templar’s have around 30 members and have been established for around 80 years.

closed since the end of April in order to permanently fix flood damage to current earthquake standards. The cellar has now been filled in using thick interior concrete walls and gravel, although the portion people can see from the doorway is still largely the same. The Cellar is an important part of the story of Broadgreen because this is where the clay material came from to build the cob walls. The hole created became the cellar as the house was built over the top. The home will be reopened from August 1. New winter hours will also be in effect until October 1 with the house open to visitors from 11am until 3pm. Visitors to the house can explore the huge collection of Victorian household goods and get a taste for what life would have been like in one of Nelson’s wonderful historical homes.

As well as Caleb and Ian, the team includes Gareth Sim, apprentice Mitch Hewson, and Anne Bradnam, who all bring different skills to the businesses. Ian has earned a reputation for excellent classic car interiors, while Mitch is good with repairs, truck seats and motorbike seats. Gareth is an expert with shade sails and has a valuable background in making sails for competitive yacht racing. In fact, he’s spent the last two campaigns with Oracle. Anne Bradnam is their part-time sewer, repairer and master of the many random tasks that come through their door, and Caleb fills the gaps, although his strength is in boat
canopies and covers. “We’ve been to jobs where our competitors have said “No, we can’t do the job” but we’ve got the attitude that any job is possible, you’ve just got to come up with a good solution, and to do that you have to think outside of the square,” says Caleb. Another plus to their new premises is a showroom and reception area, manned by Elena Hill and Lynda Mortimer. The showroom features great samples, plus a television screen which will allow customers to see for themselves the standard to which both businesses complete projects. The team are also big supporters of the wider community and this
August they will be teaming up with The Hits to see where the Nelson public think a shade solution is needed. SPORT Locals swimmers clean up at awards
Nelson swimmers featured in the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Swimmer of the Year awards held in Blenheim. Skye Humphries won gold in the 10 and under girls while Cate Barton won silver with Jessie Brown (Waimea Swim Club) winning bronze. Tasman's Corban Holland won gold, silver went to Connor Eden and bronze to William Seymour. For the 11-12 year old girls, Bree Anderson (Tasman) won gold, Ruby-Lou Stuart (Nelson South) silver and Leah Friend (Tasman) bronze. For the boys the gold medal went to Bendi Kepess, silver to Joshua Amyes (both from Tasman) and bronze for Nicholas Hall (Nelson South). It was a close contest for the 13-14 year old girls with Jenna Heywood (Nelson South) winning the gold and Cassie Hagan (Tasman) silver. Tasman's Xavier Anderson won gold in the boys with Oliver Stark winning silver. Ellie Rukuwai of Nelson South won the silver medal in the girls 15 and over age group with Tayla Graham of Waimea winning the bronze medal. Sam McKenzie claimed gold with Luke Kelly (Nelson South) winning silver and bronze for Thomas Heaton (Tasman). Sam also won both the Belsham Trophy for the Swim of the Year and the new Wendy Fryer Cup for Swimmer of the Year.

They adopted the name to honour a young fan who was taken too soon, but for Victory's rugby league team they really have risen like a phoenix. Cellar-dwellers for several seasons, the Phoenix stormed past three-time defending champions, the Richmond Rabbits, on Saturday to claim a spot in this weekend's Tasman Rugby League final at Trafalgar Park. There they'll face another team on the rise. Tahunanui Tigers have had a good season but were clear underdogs heading into Saturday's semi-final against the Wanderers Wolves, a team that won the minor premiership this season. But Tahuna got past Wanderers 30-26 thanks to a hat trick of tries to James Vailanu in Brightwater. While Victory's 32-24 win in Stoke was built on a solid second half, out-muscling the Rabbits. That means at around 4pm this Saturday a new champion will be crowned, as nether of the finalists has won the competition before. Kick off for the grand final is at 2pm.

Nelson mountainbike tracks 'rate very highly' says US expert Simon Bloomberg
Nelson could become a global mountainbiking destination, after a representative from the US-based International Mountain Biking Association assessed the region's trails this week. The Mountainbike Trails Trust invited IMBA track specialist Jason Wells to Nelson to rate the region's suitability as an international mountainbiking destination. Jason has been riding Nelson's trails with trust member Chris Mildon this week and so far he likes what he has seen. "I've ridden about 100km of trails so far, I'm thoroughly impressed," Jason says. "I've ridden trails all over the world and Nelson rates very highly." Jason says thousands of mountainbikers around the world use the IMBA website to find the best destinations for riding, and a gold star rating could result in an influx of international tourists to Nelson. He says the variety of trails in Nelson would be one of the biggest attractions for riders coming to the region. "We have a Disneyland punchlist for mountainbikers to make sure an area has dirt jumps, downhill tracks, cross-country trails and long distance trails,

and so far I'm very impressed. You are very, very spoiled here." Chris says the trust decided to invite Jason to Nelson because it would benefit the whole region. A gold star rating from IMBA would "give us a real international presence as an attractive mountainbike destination." "They have world-wide exposure with everything they promote," Chris says. "We all know how good the riding is around here but this will give us an international presence." Chris says the trust paid for Jason's visit and although "it's quite an investment, it will give us regional benefits." Jason says he rated the Hackett highly for scenery and "for pucker-factor I enjoyed Lollipop". The Coppermine was also a favourite with "a nice climb and amazing descent, that starts with rough, baby-head boulder and gets smoother and faster as you go down".

Nelson College run over rivals Waimea Nelson College still has a mathematical chance of making the semifinals, after a big 59-5 win against Waimea College in their UC Championships secondary schools rugby game at Waimea College on Saturday. Nelson College are presently in fifth place in the championships, and with two games remaining needed a bonus point win to stay within striking distance of fourth-placed St Bedes. And they did just that, scoring the bonus point try in the 24th minute and lead 31-0 at halftime before completing a nine-try demolition of Waimea College. Nelson dominated all aspects of play with their big forwards, led by No8 Brad Pool and lock Trent Knapp, laying the perfect foundation for their speedy backs to attack. After conceding to Jennian Buller by a solitary goal at the recent Top of the South in Blenheim, Nelson turned the tables to record a 30-28 win. The Anderson Cup has been added to the trophy cabinet after a convincing 31–14 win over Marlborough Under 15A.

The transfer indoors to Saxton Stadium for the Nelson Netball Age Group Tournament on Sunday proved to be a wise decision, given the fact that rain was forecast. It would have been a popular decision as some of the players would not usually have the luxury of playing indoors. Nelson was represented by Russell Curtains Under 17 and Development, Under 15 and Development and Richmond Mall Under 13 and Development. In a new initiative this year, the Netball Mainland Under 15 Championship has been established which aims to develop the Zone’s young talented players, coaches and umpires. The tournament was run “alongside” the Age Group Tournament. The weekend was the first Pool Play round, with another round next week in Christchurch before finishing with the Finals at Selwyn Netball Centre on 23 August. I “stated” the Nelson Under 15 encounter against Mid Canterbury and from the onset it would have been obvious they were well and truly a cut above their opposition.
